Reflex Protect Appoints Matt Schaefer as New CEO

September 13, 2021

Reflex Protect® announces new CEO as the company focuses on law enforcement tactical division.

MISSOULA – Reflex Protect announced today that Matt Schaefer has been appointed the new CEO of the company. He succeeds Joe Anderson, a serial entrepreneur, who will continue to be involved with the company as part of its Board of Directors.

Schaefer is president of Tactical Defense Training (TDT) of Canton, Ohio, a nationally recognized leader in law enforcement and military training. For more than two decades, Matt has trained law enforcement from local, state, and federal agencies; students from every branch of the military, including Department of Defense and Department of State; private security; and select civilians in weapons and tactics worldwide, including less-lethal use of force and chemical munitions. TDT has been the official Reflex Protect training partner for tactical and law enforcement agencies since 2020.

“Matt’s extensive experience in law enforcement, tactical and government business, training and sales makes him the perfect person to lead Reflex Protect in our focus in the tactical arena,” said Joe Anderson, former CEO of the company. “I am a big believer in giving officers the best tools to do their job,” explains Schaefer. “Simply put, Reflex Protect offers a lifesaving less-lethal spray that decons in minutes, so the Reflex system increases officer safety, reduces injuries to suspects, and puts cops back on the streets faster. I am honored to be leading this company and fully expect our groundbreaking innovations will dramatically move forward the less-lethal force options available to officers, the military, and security professionals.”

A police officer since 1995, Schaefer has worked in corrections, uniform patrol, warrants, narcotics, investigations and SWAT. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Academy of Health Sciences. He has worked with some of the largest names in the less lethal and tactical industry.

Evidence-Based Reflex Protect Sales

Reflex Protect Tactical already has news to report, from Sebring, Ohio, near Youngstown.

An officer recently trained on one of our first Reflex Protect sessions, carrying a pocket Presidia Gel on his duty belt, chose to use it when responding to a potentially violent domestic dispute on the 4th of July.  Faced with a size and strength disadvantage of an inebriated man, who ignored repeated verbal commands, the officer unholstered his Reflex Protect.  Even though the man lowered his sunglasses to shield his eyes, a single 2-second blast from six feet away rendered him immediately unable to see and disoriented.

After backup officers brought him under full control and placed him in handcuffs, the man was rapidly cleaned up with Reflex Remove.  The other officers, not yet been trained on Presidia Gel, were so impressed by the speed of both it and Reflex Remove, they reached out to us to ask if they could purchase both using their own personal uniform allowance, rather than waiting for the department to complete a full product vetting process.

What we have learned is that police are far more likely to use Presidia Gel – if verbal de-escalation has not succeeded – than any other less-than-lethal method presently available to them.  The result is that far fewer such encounters should result in injury or lasting harm to anyone.

“The last time I deployed a chemical agent aerosol was OC spray and there was significant cross-contamination that day; but not enough to incapacitate myself, my chief or the fire department personnel on scene.  It was a relief being able to deploy a chemical agent that didn’t significantly affect everyone else.  I am very pleased the only person disoriented by the Presidia Gel was the subject.  All officers on scene were able to return to full duty immediately following the call.”
– Officer Marchionda, SPD, Northeast Ohio

Being able to resolve – safely and quickly – this potentially violent situation speaks to the potential for how Presidia Gel can immediately impact law enforcement and our society at large.

Addressing the Demand from Law Enforcement and Corrections, Security, and Military Markets

Today we are thrilled to announce our commitment to working alongside law enforcement with a new company division, Reflex Protect Tactical. We are diligently working on a stand-alone website with its own branding and messaging for this important and timely new division for the company, that will also speak directly to those in corrections, security, and the military.

What many of our civilian investors might not know is that police throughout the United States must go through mandatory training on a product before a department is ever allowed to purchase.  What’s more, officers must undergo re-training yearly on every piece of equipment they use.

The Tactical Trainers

For 20 years, Tactical Defense Training (TDT), in Canton, Ohio, has been a recognized leader in law enforcement and military training.  When we demonstrated Reflex Protect Presidia Gel® and Reflex Remove™ for them in person, they knew they were seeing the future of non-lethal force. “All the reasons cops don’t like using OC [pepper] spray simply do not exist with Reflex Protect,” explains Matt Schaefer, president of TDT.  “It is truly a game changer for law enforcement.”

We are proud to announce that TDT is now our strategic law enforcement training partner.  Our relationship with them ensures that Reflex Protect Tactical will be speaking the language of law enforcement, and they will be effectively training officers on how to limit injuries to everyone involved with our products.

Our Military and LE Investors

We hear directly from many of our investors, and those who have local law enforcement experience or have served in branches of the military speak with great passion for our solution.  Jason Tarbet, for example, sent us this:

“As part of military training, I have been exposed to CS and am familiar with the effects of Mace.  Neither is easily or quickly diffused/removed and both have significant collateral impact.  At least 3 primary factors make Reflex Protect perfectly poised to lead the way to a better option at the perfect time in history:

1) A rise in public violence.

2) A need for non-lethal-but-effective deterrent options for law enforcement.

3) The need for good personal protection options particularly in an environment where job loss and resulting desperation may lead more people to consider crime as an option to survive.

Reflex Protect not only provides an option which can be specifically targeted, minimizing if not eliminating collateral impacts, but also provides the method to diffuse the product as soon as is appropriate.  These factors make Reflex Protect’s entrance to the market not only incredibly timely, but also the most humane.

I am glad to get on board with this product and company.”

We’re glad you are on board as well, Jason.  Thank you!

In the Field: The President Spoke About the Need for New Less-Lethal Technology

Just this morning in a White House Rose Garden Press Conference announcing a new Executive Order, President Donald Trump spoke of the police reform measures his administration is advancing.

“We are looking at new advanced and powerful less-lethal weapons to help prevent deadly interactions,” explained President Trump.  “New devices are being developed all the time, and we’re looking at the best of them. And cost is no object.”

We welcome this focus from the White House and highest levels of the Justice Department, but we’re already responding to this need at the local level. As soon as hospitals and school districts across the country began considering Reflex Protect®, they turned to local law enforcement for advice.

Not only did those departments whole-heartedly support its use as a “response gap” measure, they also became intrigued by our innovations – the Reflex technology spray head shooting a “bulls-eye” stream of Presidia Gel® that took down an assailant faster than pepper spray and could then be cleaned up faster than any of them had experienced.  Some departments bought healthcare versions for themselves immediately.

Over time, however, law enforcement’s demand for a new controlling force tool designed to prevent physical contact and any sort of lasting harm became more insistent, and Covid-19 made it immediate. At the onset of the pandemic, we shifted focus to this new demand from law enforcement. As you’ll see from the live video and photos below from recent field tests by our strategic partner Tactical Defense Training (TDT) in Canton, Ohio, our rapid onset, non-atomizing Presidia Gel is exactly what they needed, and Reflex Remove makes it even more attractive given increased focus on limiting use of force injuries for all involved.

“Skepticism is a survival mechanism,” explains TDT president Matt Schaefer, a former police officer and U.S. Army veteran, with experience in corrections, uniform patrol, warrants, narcotics, investigations and SWAT since 1995.

He knows that for officers at all levels, seeing is believing.  That is why Schaefer has been running trainings with officers to show them up close how both Presidia Gel® and Reflex Remove™ work faster and effectively than anything else they have ever seen.

“All the reasons cops don’t like using OC [pepper] spray simply do not exist with Reflex Protect®,” explains Schaefer.  “It is truly a game changer for Law Enforcement.”

See for yourself how officers respond to Presidia Gel and Reflex Remove for the first time. Reflex Protect has the potential to impact not only conversations about violence in the U.S., but also the immediate and important issues raised by recent demonstrations.
